What should I wear for my branding photo session?

Consider the “Uniform” for your brand

Do you have work clothes that you wear for your job that just make sense to have in your branding shoot? Let’s use those! If it’s authentic to you and your brand, then it is authentic to this shoot.

Merging Classic and Modern Style

  • Look back on the past few years and see what staples have remained in the business/entrepreneur/artist wardrobes and then put your own modern twist on it!

  • What are some options that you would wear to a client meeting, a networking event, or to actually create the art you are selling?

  • Think about who your ideal client is and how you want them to see you.

  • If you have something in your closet that you aren’t quite sure about, don’t add it to your photo shoot wardrobe. Pick an outfit that you know will be a staple for the next couple of years, not one that you know you won’t like 6 months from now.

Consider your brand colors and style

  • Stick to your brand’s color palette and style when choosing outfits and accessories! You don’t have to match those colors exactly, just stay within the coordinating/complimentary color family. For example: If one of your colors is tan, throw in some ivory, cream, camel, light browns.

  • Mix pieces together to show one cohesive look through a variety of outfits.

  • Keep in mind that wearing bright neon colors (oranges, yellows, bright reds) and strong patterns (like smaller stripes that are close together) can reflect back onto your skin and cause odd discoloration.

Look elevated, but be comfortable

  • I cannot stress this one enough! If you feel uncomfortable in your clothes, then you will look uncomfortable in your photos.

  • Choose something something that's easy to move in and comfortable for you to wear while sitting or standing. After all, this is a photo shoot.

  • I know that some outfits photograph better with a subject standing and sitting on a stool than they might with someone sitting on the ground. That’s totally fine! This is where a shot list can help you organize outfits based on props and different poses.

Consider the backdrop

  • If you have a busy backdrop of your own work environment or want to use your products behind you, then let the items behind you stand out and wear an outfit that doesn’t take the attention away from what you want to focus on.

  • If you want to be the main focus and truly stand out then choose a minimal background and an outfit with colors, textures, or patterns that move the attention toward you.

  • If you are wanting to go for a more luxurious and “expensive” look then a monochromatic outfit against similar tones can also help achieve this look
