Using staple pieces for your maternity session wardrobe

One of my favorite trends for maternity sessions these last few years is taking simple staples from your wardrobe and using them as main pieces during your maternity session. I’m all for the luxury of gowns and draping, but I believe it is incredibly beautiful to capture a woman in her everyday wardrobe. Here are a couple of examples of ways my maternity clients have used denim, bras, jackets, and work trousers to highlight their features and little ones during a session.

The Button Down Shirt

There is nothing like a classic button down shirt!

Almost all of us have one in our closets. Whether it’s a linen beauty we bought as a cover-up for the summer, a piece we wear into our office for work, or our partner’s oversized shirt; styling any of these is a minimal way to place the emphasis on your body and form instead of on your dramatic dress or gown.

You can style these tops over underwear, with or without a bra, with your everyday pants (or even or work trousers). Then choose to unbutton it fully, drape it over your shoulders, or tie it up on the top of your stomach.

I love the styling options with such a simple piece!

Denim

This one is BY FAR my favorite add into any maternity session wardrobe!

Whether you can still fit into your non-maternity jeans (unbuttoned of course!), use maternity jeans with the band rolled over for an “effortless” look, or buy oversized denim you can cuff and roll and manipulate in a casual way to show off your fashion forwardness - using denim in your session photographs so well!

Have fun with this staple! Mix textures, colors, denim jackets, or hair pieces. Denim never goes out of style, so rest-assured your maternity photos will not only scream modern sass but also stay beautifully timeless.

A Classic Bra

Take one of your nice bras, use a cotton sports bra, or even a smaller crop top and make that and your belly the statements for one of your looks!

Trousers

Trouser pants have made their comeback this last year and I LOVED how Lindsey took this every day work staple and casually put together what I believe to be the most breath-taking outfits of my season.

The mix of ivory and cream tones of the backdrop, with her khaki trousers and white button down made for the most beautiful images.

Use a non-maternity outfit

Every once in a while there is one dress or jumpsuit that still fits and looks amazing on. If you have an outfit from pre-pregnancy that you love and feel comfortable in, bring it!

One of my clients came in with a beautiful bridesmaid dress she wore in a wedding the week prior. She had on a black strapless bra and we dropped the spaghetti strap off of her shoulder to add a little sass and sexy to what was a conservative outfit.
